About Shikataro & friends

Shikataro is a friendly and cheerful young deer, though sometimes a bit clumsy. His favorite thing in the world is deer crackers. His best friend is Inocchi, a smart and perfectionist boar who is also fun to hang out with.

Shikataro lives in Nara city, which is Japan’s first permanent capital and home to many historical landmarks, including temples like Tōdai-ji, which houses the Great Buddha. The city is also famous for its sacred, free-roaming deer in Nara Park, which are the inspiration for Shikataro.
